As a professional product photographer I have always found myself looking for new ideas and ways to keep my photography fresh.<br />
<br />
A couple of years ago I have started a hobby in flying. Flying remote controlled helicopters that is. I have actually found a way to use both the hobby of flying and photography at the same time. The same time I have mastered flying RC helicopters, I purchased my very first multirotor or drone. Drone really is a term unliked by RC hobbyisists because it tends to be a negative term for a multirotor. So I will be using the term multirotor for these things.<br />
<br />
Last christmas I was able to purchase my very first DJI multirotor. I have always wanted one since I have tried to fly a DJI phantom 3. I have seen footages from a DJI phantom 3 and was blown away with the quality of the images and video it produced, considering the one I tried was the basic package and not the pro version.<br />
<br />
The DJI spark is small...I mean really small for a multirotor that is packed with features. One reason I didn't do aerial photography as much before was it was difficult to lug around a multirotor that is big in size. Even more difficult when you bring the case along with. Also, it is such a hassle to mount my GoPro to my large multirotor every time I wanna do some shots with it. The DJI spark pretty much solves all that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rkEsPVRf_UM/Woxa5ZD40TI/AAAAAAAADbc/mFOnBxlLYS8_P0ncZ2Ir5lcMjumy6XxAwCLcBGAs/s1600/Spark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="265" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rkEsPVRf_UM/Woxa5ZD40TI/AAAAAAAADbc/mFOnBxlLYS8_P0ncZ2Ir5lcMjumy6XxAwCLcBGAs/s400/Spark.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The DJI spark is a multirotor wonder. It has a front sensor for obstacle avoidance, it also acts as a sensor if you want to control it with your hands. It has sensors for detecting the ground. It also has a 15 minute flight time per battery...which is great for taking quick footages. Foldable props that are easily removed. It links up with your smartphone so you can use your smartphone as a remote and a monitor at the same time, Or you can attach the smartphone to its dedicated remote for even better control and range. It has a built in camera on a gimbal that does 1080p videos or 12 mp stills. The gimbal is excellent for stabilizing the camera on fast maneuvers.<br />
<br />
Flying in snow or sand? No problem, the spark can easily take off in the palm of your hands using gesture controls or simply by using the remote. Landing in the palm of your hand is very simple too. This is something that is almost impossible with bigger multirotors.<br />
<br />
I once wanted to take some videos outdoors in the snow but didn't want to bring the case with. I basically put the spark on the inside of my jacket and off I went. This thing awesome!<br />
<br />
Here are some first sample shots from my spark:<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The only downside to the DJI spark is that it can only shoot at 1080p. Again, if I am looking for something with a better camera I would have gotten a DJI mavic or a mavic air. But for now the spark is good enough for me. Somewhere down the line I might get something better. For now I am going to use my spark as much as I can.</div>

The 2014 Chicago Botanic Garden Wonderland Express is going on right now till January 4 2015. It showcases model trains going around a model of downtown Chicago and parts of Evanston and Glencoe Illinois.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GlESBCiiBmI/VJcH2PoH0QI/AAAAAAAADVo/0J2NVxPvRoo/s1600/IMG_0085.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GlESBCiiBmI/VJcH2PoH0QI/AAAAAAAADVo/0J2NVxPvRoo/s1600/IMG_0085.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The houses in Chicago.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The event is filled with handmade landscapes from plant material. Pretty much most of the building are created by putting twigs together. The landscapes are breathtaking especially if you have experienced scale modeling.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kQe2JI0wYOs/VJcH1W7oYVI/AAAAAAAADVk/cgDIghHsZqs/s1600/IMG_0092.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kQe2JI0wYOs/VJcH1W7oYVI/AAAAAAAADVk/cgDIghHsZqs/s1600/IMG_0092.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Glencoe Metra Station.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Every year I have always brought my trusty 6D with my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM. For sceneries like this especially if you need to reach hard to reach areas, you need the most reach that you can get. 200mm, is perfect. And instead of bringing a wide angle lens for wide shots, I instead brought my Canon G15 with me. The ability to shoot raw in low light sceneries like this combined with a maximum f-stop of 1.8, the G15 is priceless. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ravinia.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The display is great, especially for kids. The night that we were there, the kids outnumbered the adults. Kids love displays like these. There's a sheet that you get at the beginning of the exhibit and you'd have to find the little penguins that are scattered around the area. You'd find them standing in front of the buildings, and you mark your sheet where you find them. Kids have a good time doing that.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The famous Bell tower at Chicago Botanic Garden.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
One of my favorite displays is the Evanston/Glencoe area where they have the dioramas for the Evanston National Hospital that has some trivia in the information next to it. It also has the Glencoe station near the Ravinia festival. Of course, the Chicago Botanic Garden display is detailed down to the entrance up to the Bell Tower.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lighthouse on Lake Michigan.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There were trains going around everywhere. Some of them even go above your head. The cool thing about them is that the operators are walking around everywhere ready to give you information about a particular area that you want to know about.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The 4th Presbyterian Church.</td></tr>

The event does provide cookies and hot chocolate to the visitors. So if you are feeling hungry make sure to stop over to keep yourself full and warm.<br />

They feature holiday lights on the entire path walk of the garden. It is a delight to see the lights from start to finish.<br />

<br />
The trees along the pathway are decorated with different types of lights in awesome colors. Some of the lights do interact with people walking along the pathway. There's an area where the lights change when you hug the tree, some lights change when you speak in a microphone along the pathway. Some do have rotary switches that you turn and they change colors.<br />

There's an area where lights are projected into the trees and tells a story of the four seasons. It's really mesmerizing. There's an area where the lights interact with the classical music that is playing in the background.<br />

For this trip I brought along my 6D equipped with my Canon 17-40mm f/4L. The 6D as I have reviewed on this site is EXCELLENT in low light. I suppose that the 5D MKIII is better but the 6D is so far my go to camera for low light, I don't have a 5D MKIII, but I know it has the same capabilities as the 6D in lowlight...probably better.<br />

While the GoPro cameras are awesome for videos and stills for their size, I have found my GoPro hero 3 white edition somehow lacking the resolution I want for taking shots up in the air. While it is capable of taking 1080p videos at 30 fps, it is also capable of taking stills up in the air at 5 megapixels. 5 megapixels used to be enough resolution about ten years ago. The photos were awesome for the web, but I do a lot of printing at 13x19" and above and if you are printing that big, the 5 megapixel resolution starts to show it's limits.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nGD-9wTNttA/VGJE5cI1gLI/AAAAAAAADQI/7GZnu_O5AjI/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6478.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nGD-9wTNttA/VGJE5cI1gLI/AAAAAAAADQI/7GZnu_O5AjI/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6478.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I felt I needed more resolution from my GoPro. I then was gonna go buy the GoPro hero 3+ black edition when GoPro released the hero 4 line, which is a totally new model from the previous ones. They are faster, have more resolution, and new camera and video features that you cannot find from the older models. I then decided to purchase the GoPro hero 4 silver edition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eQC5mRoMp_I/VGJE6ZtAQAI/AAAAAAAADQQ/q2pKUgANvP0/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6480.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eQC5mRoMp_I/VGJE6ZtAQAI/AAAAAAAADQQ/q2pKUgANvP0/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6480.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="p1">
The GoPro hero 4 silver has a 4k video resolution at 15 frames a second. A bit slow for 4k, but where it shines is the 12 megapixel still shot resolution which is more than twice of what my white edition has. 12 megapixels equals 13"x10" of prints at 300 dpi. Now 300 dpi is used mainly for very hi resolution photos used in professional prints. For everyday prints, 13"x10" prints at 300 dpi is way more than enough. Lower the resolution down to 240 dpi and you get prints of around 16.25"x12.5". Lower it down a bit more and your print size gets even bigger, which is more than what I need. This is the reason why I got it in the first place...photo resolution. It also has the ability to capture photos at 30 frames a second. Of course you can always adjust these in the settings.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-74diwewcECI/VGJE6lJ393I/AAAAAAAADQY/HPU_vZlhj-w/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6481.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-74diwewcECI/VGJE6lJ393I/AAAAAAAADQY/HPU_vZlhj-w/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6481.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The GoPro hero 4 silver edition has a built in lcd screen for previewing your shots. For how thin it is including the lcd screen, it fits perfectly with the cradle for my quadcopter. Although I'm never gonna use the lcd when it's mounted on my quadcopter, it's a plus. It's always nice to have an lcd for previewing when handholding the camera. The lcd is awesome for composing your shots. For viewing the files, it's not bad at all. For accessing the settings, the lcd is precious.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kM88U2FUGCI/VGJE65VAwjI/AAAAAAAADQc/r49Ipq63wkQ/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6482.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kM88U2FUGCI/VGJE65VAwjI/AAAAAAAADQc/r49Ipq63wkQ/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6482.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In the settings menu you can access the general settings for the camera and the mode settings of the current mode you are in. The general settings lets you adjust the touch display, orientation, sound, video format, date/time etc. The mode settings lets you adjust the frame rate, size, spot metering etc., depending of what mode you are in. The lcd has a lock feature where you must slide your fingers and unlock it first before it lets you change settings. This prevents you from accidentally changing settings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mR13XeexW9g/VGJE7tvVRkI/AAAAAAAADQw/ntcAwFaHm6Q/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mR13XeexW9g/VGJE7tvVRkI/AAAAAAAADQw/ntcAwFaHm6Q/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6484.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The new GoPro hero 4 silver lcd screen is pretty much like previous lcd screen than you attach to the back of the hero 3. Nothing really new here except for the lock feature. It pretty much is for previewing and composing shots, and also for changing the settings. The thing I felt that improved a lot with the lcd screen is the touch screen feature. The lcd for the hero 4 silver is more responsive and easier to touch and swipe. The older lcd is troublesome. This is the best new feature of the new screen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bTvG--wW-lQ/VGJE7t-5rLI/AAAAAAAADQ0/A1h9FMT5b0U/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6485.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bTvG--wW-lQ/VGJE7t-5rLI/AAAAAAAADQ0/A1h9FMT5b0U/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6485.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sizewise, its really similar to my older hero 3 white edition. Although this one includes the lcd screen. The older hero 3 adds about 1/3 of its size if you attach an lcd screen. It fits perfectly in my quadcopter mount with absolutely no difference at all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mnju7sOdW_Q/VGJE78Fp3gI/AAAAAAAADQ4/jwB8cQ8KpHk/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6486.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mnju7sOdW_Q/VGJE78Fp3gI/AAAAAAAADQ4/jwB8cQ8KpHk/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6486.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="p1">
The new GoPro hero 4 has the same ports on the side like the old GoPro hero 3 has. It has the mini usb port for charging and for transferring files, and a micro hdmi port so you can attach it to your hdmi monitor for viewing. Also on this side is the micro sd card slot. It supports up to 64 gb of micro sd capacity.</div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fs4aX1f95T8/VGJE8jBYMtI/AAAAAAAADRM/nR9h_MvHETU/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fs4aX1f95T8/VGJE8jBYMtI/AAAAAAAADRM/nR9h_MvHETU/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6487.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since this model has the lcd already, the port on the back is for attaching a higher capacity battery pack for longer recording times. I have no use for the extra battery power as I always charge mine after use. Recording times with it at 1080p at 60 fps is around 1 hour and 50 minutes with wifi off as what the site says. Although I'm not really sure if that's with the lcd on or not. I have never tried this, you might wanna try this out yourself.<br />
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xeO0ebqqNRo/VGJE8quJWoI/AAAAAAAADRQ/7h3Sy3J13kc/s1600/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xeO0ebqqNRo/VGJE8quJWoI/AAAAAAAADRQ/7h3Sy3J13kc/s400/Keurig_11-5-2014%2B6488.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
What made me buy the GoPro hero 4 silver is its Protune feature. Protune was introduced with the Gopro hero 3+ black cameras when it came out. Although it was used only for video before. With the GoPro hero 4 cameras, Protune is now available to use for both video and stills. Protune is a feature where you can manually adjust the white balance, color, ISO limit, sharpness and exposure compensation. The GoPro being a fully automatic camera now allows users to set these parameters according to their shooting needs, which means that although its a fully automatic camera, it somehow has manual controls that give you flexibility.<br />
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
Another feature that is new with the GoPro hero 4 silver is the night shot feature. Night shot allows you to take pictures in lowlight. Either still or time lapse. I haven't tried these features yet, but I'll post some photos when I do.<br />
<br />
Took the GoPro silver out on my quad and did some shots before the snowy days come in. Here are the sample shots:</div>
<div class="p1">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The school view from the public park.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The photos are uploaded and tweaked in Lightroom. Although the photos look pretty good coming straight from the camera. With enough resolution for medium sized prints depending on how you print them. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now I could've gotten the black edition instead of the silver...why didn't I? Pretty much the only difference between the black and the silver is the maximum video resolution. The black can do 4K video at 30 frames a second. The silver can do 4K video with a frame rate of 15 a second. The main reason for me getting the GoPro camera is to capture stills, and 12 mp is enough for me for now at least. The silver has a built in lcd screen and the black does not, it's also $100 cheaper. I do a lot of video but I'm not doing any 4k videos YET. In the future I will for sure, but for now the GoPro Hero 4 silver edition is the perfect camera for me and my quad. </div>

Went to a neighborhood in Illinois a couple of weeks ago and I luckily brought my quadcopter with me. With the installed go pro in it I flew it over the neighborhood. With fall setting in, paired with good sunset lighting, I captured these 2 photos just by hovering around a couple of hundred feet form where I was standing.<br />

So we stayed at a beach a couple of days last month. It was a bit crappy because every afternoon the skies became all cloudy. We never got a chance to see a clear sky the whole week we were at the beach. One of the best days we were there I just decided to set up my Go pro camera to take a sunset time lapse shot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately I only had my monopod with me when I did this. So I had to stick the Go pro into the monopod and held it down with the straps from my bag. A big no-no for time lapse shots as you have to keep it steady. The camera slipped in the middle of the time lapse and I had to reposition it.</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mxJFgN3R__M/VBczt1OUcSI/AAAAAAAADJo/ccbc1k4NNxQ/s1600/IMG_2271_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mxJFgN3R__M/VBczt1OUcSI/AAAAAAAADJo/ccbc1k4NNxQ/s1600/IMG_2271_web.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As always, Egg harbor in Door county Wisconsin is a great place to take sunset photos. During this trip I always had my Canon G15 with me all the time. It's a nice little camera that can shoot raw, has excellent dynamic range, and pretty much has dslr features without the bulk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1bEwZtyBE7M/VBcztj1Ec7I/AAAAAAAADJk/ZYU9nrP8k1A/s1600/IMG_2285_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1bEwZtyBE7M/VBcztj1Ec7I/AAAAAAAADJk/ZYU9nrP8k1A/s1600/IMG_2285_web.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
It is pretty awesome to take photos during sunrise and sunsets because the colors are so dramatic that you cannot see these colors when the sun is high. At noon, sunlight is pretty harsh that it gives you very intense highlights and shadows. I personally don't like taking shots at noon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N5PFKFWLpI0/VBczt_d2aMI/AAAAAAAADJs/Gx-BRgI2wdc/s1600/IMG_2291_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N5PFKFWLpI0/VBczt_d2aMI/AAAAAAAADJs/Gx-BRgI2wdc/s1600/IMG_2291_web.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Egg harbor marina is a very nice place to take shots during sunsets. It is one of the best places to be in when in Door County Wisconsin.<br />

For shots like this I have my macro setup. I fitted my Canon 5D MK2 with my 100mm macro, with my Canon MR-14 macro ring light attached. The macro ring light is perfect for keeping your aperture as narrow as you can have it. Shooting very close up, a wide aperture will greatly limit your depth of field so it is very helpful if you can close your aperture as much as you can.<br /><br />

I didn't bring a tripod with me. A tripod would stabilize my camera better, although it is bothersome in some cases and you should be considerate with other people walking around. Also in some places, a tripod is banned for safety issues...and this is one place where you can't bring one.<br />

I cannot get my hands off of my new quad. One sunday I just decided to go into a park and at a school campus and start shooting with my Go pro and my quad. The weather was great with little wind, which is great for flying. I just wished my quad can carry a dslr for higher resolution images but for now my Go pro does the job pretty good.<br />

When flying around public areas please do make sure you know the laws about flying rc aircaft where you are. Please be considerate to other people around you. Also make sure that you are not disturbing wildlife in their natural habitat. I always make sure that I keep my distance when flying around wildlife to ensure their safety and the safety of my aircraft.<br />

When my sister in law had her baby I cannot wait to take the first official studio photos for her baby. It was a good thing the baby was well behaved during the session.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For this session, I decided to use my Canon 6D, and my favorite portrait studio lens my Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. I know a lot of photographers prefer an 85mm for studio portraits but the lack of space makes me use the 50mm more than the 85. If it was outdoors it would've been a different story. The 50mm feels more comfortable indoors and you can frame your shots better than using something longer than that...but then again it's all personal preference.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since I was using studio strobes, I set my shooting mode to manual so I can dial in whatever aperture and shutter I want. Studio strobes give out plenty of light so I have more wiggle room for my settings than if I was shooting without them. I set my aperture to f/3.5 and my shutter speed to 100/sec. Then adjusted the strobes for the best lighting. I used 2 strobes, one for the main light in the left side and one fill light on the right. Shot in raw and adjusted in Lightroom and Photoshop:<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I'm still trying to get used to the controls and the flight modes but so far so good! It's a good thing to have experience in flying rc helicopters when starting to fly these things. They are so much easier to fly and much more stable.<br />
<br />
So I finally attached my Go Pro camera to it and take some aerial shots. The Go Pro has excellent image quality compared to starter cameras that come with cheaper quads and that was the reason why I purchased a higher end quad, so I can at least mount a higher quality camera to it instead of just dealing with crappy image quality.<br />
<br />
Here is one of my first shots with my new quad and my Go Pro:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jYa76zSJODc/VACGugDsH5I/AAAAAAAADH0/Du28whwXKpU/s1600/Aerial%2Bgo%2Bpro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jYa76zSJODc/VACGugDsH5I/AAAAAAAADH0/Du28whwXKpU/s1600/Aerial%2Bgo%2Bpro.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I am actually loving this setup. I will post some updates when I fly more and take shots with this thing.rbadiolahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01706706959992546284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1199046130419769252.post-30236602945432236582014-08-25T20:42:00.000-05:002014-08-25T20:42:00.728-05:00A lazy day at the horse race track<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So people from work had decided to go to the horse race track to spend some time just to watch race horses go at it. I have honestly never been to one and I was pretty excited as race horses has always been a very good subject for photography.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I packed my stuff early that day for the event. I packed my <a href="http://meandmyaperture.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-canon-eos-6d.html" target="_blank">Canon 6D</a> along with my favorite go to lenses, my Canon 70-200 IS USM f/2.8. My Canon 70-200 IS USM lens has been my lens of choice for events like this. As a lot of photographers have said before...it is probably the best lens ever in the Canon lineup. I agree, I have brought this beast to almost every event I've ever been and it has not let me down. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we were at the second level of the race track and my maximum 200mm focal length wasn't enough. I was wondering if I should've brought in my 400mm instead. A friend advised me to go down one level and shoot by the railings, which was the perfect idea.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I stood and waited for the horses to go around the track and I waited near the finish line. I set my camera to aperture priority to isolate my subject from the background, I knew that in this scenario shutter priority would've been the best setting so I can set a fast speed for my shutter to capture the running horses, but it was really bright out and I had enough light to set my aperture open and still maintain a perfect shutter speed, so I set it up that way. With burst mode on I kept my finger on the shutter when the horses were a couple of feet away from me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The 70-200's excellent focusing speed captured the frames perfectly. And this was my best shot of the day: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pA1BqvCeowc/U_ICi6ffDSI/AAAAAAAADHk/cTK52MsSlBM/s1600/IMG_3420_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pA1BqvCeowc/U_ICi6ffDSI/AAAAAAAADHk/cTK52MsSlBM/s1600/IMG_3420_web.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />Not too shabby for a lazy day at the race track.rbadiolahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01706706959992546284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1199046130419769252.post-23797209634298827962014-08-18T21:00:00.000-05:002014-08-18T21:00:00.260-05:00Sunrise time-lapse with my Go Pro cameraOne morning while near a lake in Tomahawk Wisconsin, I waited for sunrise. I looked at my phone and the weather app said that sunrise will be around 5:25ish. This was the perfect time to set up my Go Pro for that awesome sunrise to come.<br />
<br />
I set it up on a tripod by the dock, turned off the lcd screen and set up time lapse mode. This camera is way easier to setup for time lapse than a dslr with a timer. I know because up to this time I still haven't used the time lapse module that I bought for my dslr...it's still in the packaging, brand new and unused.<br />
<br />
So I pressed the button and the camera just shot frame by frame...once every 5 seconds. I managed to take 837 images, and processed everything using Adobe Premiere. All in all it gave me about 27 seconds of video.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It has seen more use than my dslr during a couple of our vacations. It's compact, it's always ready to go and it gives me the almost the quality of a starter dslr. I usually just have it on a case attached to my belt and I can go wherever I want with it. Beats lugging around a dslr all the time. We went back to Door County Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago and I was able to take a sunset photo with it. I waited till the sun was about to set and sat at the shore near the beach to capture it. Here's what I got:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pThvv0RG0Iw/U-AV3i6Iw9I/AAAAAAAADHQ/PBu0AFk5FQw/s1600/IMG_2325_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pThvv0RG0Iw/U-AV3i6Iw9I/AAAAAAAADHQ/PBu0AFk5FQw/s1600/IMG_2325_web.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Shot handheld, with a simple flick of the mode switch, and the exposure compensation dial, I was ready to go shoot.<br />

It has been busy the past few months with work, hobbies, and it's summer. Everybody's busy doing stuff outdoors. I was too. The past few months I have been experimenting with other photography equipment. I have been using My <a href="http://www.meandmyaperture.blogspot.com/2014/02/canon-powershot-g15.html" target="_blank">Canon Poweshot G15</a> more when we go out. I am planning to get a macro flash adapter for it and bring it with when we go to our favorite botanic garden. I also have been using my Go Pro camera more...both for stills and video. Another thing I am kinda busy with is video. I have been doing more video the past months.<br />
<br />
Also I have been slowly getting into aerial photography and videography using quads, for now I'm just starting out with a smaller one. I can't wait to get a bigger one and use my Go Pro with it.<br />
<br />
I'll be posting more stuff soon. For now here's one of the shots I did when I was on vacation in Wisconsin the past couple of weeks. It was taken with a Go Pro.<br />

Spring is almost here again. We've had a terrible winter season and signs of spring coming in is a sign of big relief. Spring brings one of the most awesome events in Chicago. Yes, I am talking about the Chicago Flower and Garden Show in Navy Pier.<br />

This year I enjoyed a lot of their exhibits. One of them is an exhibit of old file cabinets used to contain plants and flowers. It's a pretty ingenious way of reusing them.<br />

This year, instead of making my visit miserable by carrying a bag full of photographic equipment, I decided to bring one camera...yes, one camera, my <a href="http://www.meandmyaperture.blogspot.com/2014/02/canon-powershot-g15.html" target="_blank">Canon G15</a>. A small but powerful camera that can shoot in raw and pretty good in lowlight.<br />

Yesterday I was doing a series of shots for this video that we are presenting for work. We actually shot a couple of frames in our green screen room so we can knock out the backgrounds of our shots easier either in After Effects or Photoshop. It was one rare event that we just used fluorescent lighting instead of strobes for an easier green screen setup.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then one of our creative leads asked me if we can shoot a person inside a bathroom stall for one of the slides and I said yes. But then I had to use a speedlite for portable lighting due to the fact that studio lights aren't portable enough to squeeze in tight spaces in situations like that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then brought along a wireless trigger for the speedlite and a Canon 580 EXII with me during the shoot. I used a Canon 24-105mm f/4 lens because I needed a wider angle lens due to the space limitation inside the restrooms. I then had the idea to make the shot more memorable by having it look like one of those godly shots where light was coming from a single source, in this case, the person who is doing his business inside the stall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then asked the talent to hold the speedlite and bounce it on the stall door while I take the shot. I then crouched down, focused, and took the shot. When the preview came out, me and the creative lead were laughing so much at the shot: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_pP75NO3NFI/Uxim8dbmMHI/AAAAAAAADCU/mf6miJy9Fjk/s1600/img_4979.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_pP75NO3NFI/Uxim8dbmMHI/AAAAAAAADCU/mf6miJy9Fjk/s1600/img_4979.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of my favorite shots this year.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

I then processed the shot in Photoshop and added an somewhat HDR effect to accentuate the bathroom floor a bit. It came out pretty funny but I loved the shot so much that I just had to put it in my portfolio.rbadiolahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01706706959992546284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1199046130419769252.post-18098087958200111772014-02-28T21:44:00.000-06:002014-03-06T10:45:54.049-06:00Door County Coastal Byway Kiosk project<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

It is a great honor for one of my photos to be used in things like this. I cannot wait to go there and see how the photo was used.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Looking for a pocketable camera that gives you the flexibility of an SLR without the bulk? I have asked myself this question plenty of times already. Usually the first thing that pops into my head are the micro four thirds interchangeable cameras. Some models that have the APS-C sized sensors such as the Sony NEX and the Canon EOS M also comes to mind. There are a lot of stuff in the small, pocketable camera category that you'd have to spend time researching which one will fit your shooting habits best. I came to a decision to get the Canon G15. For all the reasons why I came to that conclusion, read on.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pZBPI5WURrQ/UwKYEPjl2qI/AAAAAAAADBE/uWaPraid5v0/s1600/IMG_1679.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pZBPI5WURrQ/UwKYEPjl2qI/AAAAAAAADBE/uWaPraid5v0/s1600/IMG_1679.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">With the lens extended.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The Canon G15 came out in 2012. I got mine last month of the time of writing this. Which means the G15 is almost two and a half years old. Amazon sells it for around $350 - $450. I got mine brand new for a good deal and that was one of the reasons why I got this beauty in the first place. It gave me the balance of a nice camera with a pretty good price.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iquB4BTPwIY/UwKYEEzlL-I/AAAAAAAADA8/Bi8_zNFeN_8/s1600/IMG_1681.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iquB4BTPwIY/UwKYEEzlL-I/AAAAAAAADA8/Bi8_zNFeN_8/s1600/IMG_1681.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The side has speakers for playback.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The G15 as of time of writing is the predecessor of the current model G16. For digital imaging specs, it is not far behind with the current model. For around $100-$150 less. I got mine after a week of ordering it. When I held it up the first time I was pretty impressed by the build. The body is made out of metal. Not some cheapy material as some other point and shoot camera has. I was pretty impressed.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Top view of the G15.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One of the reasons why I bought the G15 is the exposure compensation dial at the top of the camera. An ISO dial on the top of this camera would have been a dream come true, but the exposure compensation dial is an awesome feature. This enables me to adjust exposure compensation without digging through the menus by pressing buttons. A lot of camera manufacturers today are now adding the ISO and exposure compensation dials instead of burying these into menus that you have to dig through. Adjusting exposure compensation is now a breeze in aperture of shutter priority with this camera. The mode dial includes a C1, C2, Manual, Aperture and Shutter priority, Program, Auto, etc. Basically I only use AV, TV, Manual most of the time. I still need to create settings for my C1 and C2 settings. The flash can be popped on the top left side of the camera with a flick of the switch. In manual, AV, or TV mode, when the flash isn't up it means the flash isn't activated. The zoom and the shutter button are in one unit. In the top middle part of the camera is another reason why I got this camera...it's a hotshoe that allows the use of Canon speedlite flashes. A very neat feature from a point and shoot camera.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VcGGzIMnWQ4/UwKYG0puLnI/AAAAAAAADBc/HQQZ0KqCZRQ/s1600/IMG_1685.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VcGGzIMnWQ4/UwKYG0puLnI/AAAAAAAADBc/HQQZ0KqCZRQ/s1600/IMG_1685.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Disregard the screen protector on the LCD. I attached that myself.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
In the back of the camera, bottom left part are buttons for the tracking AF button, an asterisk button, metering button, and the menu button. Dslr users won't have a problem identifying which button is for which. The only new button that I didn't know about was the asterisk button...and it's a button that I use a lot after I knew what it was for. When you are in manual mode, AV or TV mode and you need to take a quick shot without adjusting anything to get the right exposure, press this and the camera automatically finds the best setting for the lighting condition in an instant. It's pretty neat when you pull out your camera and you have no time for adjustments. Viewfinder is pretty much pointless for me. It's nice to have in case I don't want to use my lcd.<br />
<br />
Also in that area is the dial that also acts as a 4 way joystick. It lets you adjust the focus mode, ISO, flash, and the display. The dial also changes your focus point. The top right portion of the camera has the movie record button. Near the viewfinder is the preview button for previewing your shots. On the top left portion of the camera is a shortcut button which you can program to any quick setting you want.<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dZSrtmP6zCM/UwKYG_vc__I/AAAAAAAADBY/j8CMIAmVJlA/s1600/IMG_1687.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dZSrtmP6zCM/UwKYG_vc__I/AAAAAAAADBY/j8CMIAmVJlA/s1600/IMG_1687.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">An ISO dial would have been awesome with the exposure compensation dial.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The camera has a fixed LCD screen on the back. A lot of people had complaints about this. I don't have a problem with it. I guess with people who are so used with an articulating lcd this is a problem. I know it gives you more flexibility shooting from awkward angles, but I never had a camera that has an articulating lcd in the back so I am comfortable with a fixed one. This is also one of the reasons why this camera is pretty thin compared to models that have articulating screens in them.<br />

Image quality of this camera is pretty good considering a smaller sensor than a DSLR. The camera has the ability to focus close to around 1 cm in macro mode, and I tell you...1 centimeter is close. From what I understand you can actually attach a Canon macro flash in front of the lens if you have the filter attachment for it. Pretty sweet for a point and shoot.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I first took this camera at a botanic garden near our place. It was overcast. When it's overcast you never will get much color from your digital camera. Now here's where the cameras shortcomings come in. Considering the sensor is on the small side...dynamic range is what you'd expect from a small sensor camera. the highlights easily gets overblown. Other than that, color rendition is pretty good. A little post processing usually brings out more colors in your photograph.</div>

By the way did I mention that this camera has a 28-140mm 35mm equivalent lens, with a maximum aperture of f/1.8-2.8? That 1.8 maximum aperture for a lens makes a lot of difference in low light. It also renders a pretty pleasing bokeh when shot wide open.<br />

It has a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 sec. Pretty good for a point and shoot but then again, I wouldn't use this camera for sports or fast moving subject. Although auto focus speed is pretty good too. I was able to lock in the subject about 1/4 of a second in pretty good lighting. Rarely that auto focus hunts even in bad lighting. Also, focus can be set manually through the settings if desired.<br />

Maximum ISO is at 12800. I wouldn't use it at maximum though. At around ISO 640, you start to notice noise in the photos due to the smaller sensor. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Without flash, in lowlight, this camera delivers.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The white balance of the camera is not bad either. As I have mentioned, I usually shoot in Raw anyway and adjust my white balance using software especially with smaller cameras. </div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M5RvelA7WZ0/UvQo3K2yZSI/AAAAAAAADAU/Bh6CqMglWaw/s1600/IMG_0600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M5RvelA7WZ0/UvQo3K2yZSI/AAAAAAAADAU/Bh6CqMglWaw/s1600/IMG_0600.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The in camera noise reduction isn't too bad either.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now rounding up the good and the bad features of this camera, here are the reasons why I decided to get it:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ability to shoot RAW - very important to me as I shoot raw about 95% of the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Exposure compensation dial - very easy access when shooting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ability to use Canon speedlites - I love this feature. Did I mention that you can also attach a flash trigger to the hotshoe for studio flashes?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Built in ND filter - useful when shooting waterfalls. Don't need to attach an nd anymore. Also helpful when using with studio lights as the minimum aperture is only f/8.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Minimum ISO of ISO 80 - I have never seen a point and shoot with an ISO 80 feature. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Full HD at 24 fps - 30 fps would have been better but I have cameras that can do that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The awesome 28-140mm 35mm equivalent lens with f/1.8-2.8 - I will admit that this was the selling point why I chose this over the G1X. You cannot go wrong with a 1.8 lens, really!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now why did I get this instead of the G1X? The G1X has a slower lens but a bigger sensor. The G15's faster lens makes up for the smaller sensor as you can let more light in which is the advantage of having a bigger sensor. That somehow evens it up for around $200 less.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why did I get this rather than an EOS M? The EOS M from the majority of the reviews I watched and read has a lousy autofocus. Also I would have to invest more money for lenses and a flash for it. The G15 has all the lens I am ever gonna need for a small camera. Plus I can use my Canon speedlites if I wanted to.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why did I get this instead of a Sony Nex or any micro four thirds ILC? Again, the main point of getting this camera is the grab and go thing for most situations. I just wanted a camera that's all in one, instead of thinking what lens to bring with it. If that was the case, I'd bring my 6D with me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why did I get this instead of the newer G16? Really the only new thing about the G16 is wifi. It has a slightly faster af but for about $100- $150 less, I can go on without wifi.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now these are my opinions. Everybody has their own.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These features are what makes the Canon G15 an awesome camera. Some of the features in it actually are better than a starter dslr. But then the G15's shortcoming is it's small sensor. But then again this is a travel/party/backup camera that I am gonna put in my pocket and shoot with, without the bulk of a dslr.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been using this camera for about a month and a half now and I have it almost every day, ready to shoot anytime. For a little sacrifice on image quality I can go on and shoot whenever I want to.</div>
